Classic Formula Ford @ Walter Hayes with Andy Wallace

The 2008 Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone was the venue for Andy Wallace to return to his racing roots. The 1988 Le Mans Winner and 1986 British F3 Champion borrowed a 1975 Crossle 25F normally raced by Joe Walton, a plan masterminded by the Classic Formula Ford Committee in order to promote the championship.

Andy, the former Pre 74 FF1600 Champion, visited a display CFF1600 mounted at the Silverstone Classic this year which is where the idea first came up. The club were keen to see how he took to racing a FF1600 again after a 25 year gap. Andy raced alongside Joe in a more recent Ray chassis and his Dad Paul Walton in an identical Crossle. During testing Andy recorded a best time of 65.2 seconds (which is 3/10 quicker than the pole time set for the Classic FF1600 Silverstone rounds!).

Considering the age of the chassis, the conditions and the length of time since he last drove a car of this type Andy did a superb job. Paul and Joe also definitely seemed to find his comments on the car and the track very helpful. There was a good atmosphere in the Garage and Andy and all the regular Classic FF1600 Drivers who entered had a good weekends racing.

During the heats an excellent effort in tricky conditions saw Andy battling with much newer cars rising from 17th on the grid to 13th - missing 12th by just 2/10ths on the last dash to the line.

Under-steer Andy?

Having missed an immediate place in the semi finals by just over a second Andy lined up in the last chance race with the sister car of Paul Walton close by...

From 11th on the grid Andy was up to 6th at the end of lap one. Gradually a few other Drivers in newer chassis got going and he was eventually demoted back to 11th again, but seemed to have plenty of fun in the Crossle.

The club would like to thank Andy for his terrific performance on the track and for his friendliness and approachability with all our fellow Club Members and all the visitors to Garage 9.

Thanks also to Paul Walton, Robin, and the rest of their team for their contribution and for providing a quick reliable car - a real credit to Classic FF1600. Also to all our members for helping to create a memorable weekend and the CFFR Committee Members for their work on the display and in supplying tea and chocs to keep out the cold!

Andy Wallace Visits Classic Formula Ford @ Silverstone Classic Meeting

At the 2008 Silverstone Classic meeting a small group of Classic Formula Ford members put on a display similar to the one organisaed for the London Motorsport show. Thanks very much to Matt Taylerson for the loan of his Hawke DL11.

We noted from the commentary that Andy Wallace - 1985 British F3 Champion, World Sports Car Champion, and multiple 24 Hr Race Winner including Le Mans for Jaguar was racing in a Group C Jaguar. Andy was of course the Pre 74 FF1600 Champion in a Hawke DL11 back in 1980 (it looks like history is about to repeat itself with Jon Davies in 2008) and is therefore by an intergallactic margin the most successful ex 'Classic' (ish)  FF1600 Driver.  Andrew Smith visited the Pits and managed to persuade him to come over and see the car (Hawke DL11)  and have his picture taken! He struck all of us as being a very nice chap, encouraging and supportive of what we were trying to do, even after Andrew gave him one of our Beginners Introductory Packs!

London Motorsport Show

Classic Formula Ford attended the London Motorsport Show on 8th and 9th December at the ExCeL exhibition centre. Rory Farrell's Crossle took pride of place on the stand, sporting a gleaming new coat of paint. This, together with a shiny BBE engine, made the stand really look the part. Many club members took turns on duty and were available to describe the multiple benefits of racing in the championship. A new 'flyer' was produced, together with a detailed list of cars currently for sale. Many visitors showed an interest in the stand with around eight showing serious intent to start racing. Many thanks to those who contributed to the success of the stand, in particular to Bernard Baxter Engineering and the Classic F3 club who shared the cost with CFF, and the members who were on hand to answer questions. The committee is currently considering an offer to attend the Historic Motorsport Show at Stoneleigh for a very reasonable price, so we will be looking for more volunteers in the new year!
